Miyako and I set out on another tour yesterday to Hiraizumi Japan. Rain was forecast for most of the day, but we were excited and ready to make the best of it. The tour was divided into two parts. The first part was Chūson-ji Temple. The temples, gardens, and archaeological sites dating back to the 11^th and 12^th centuries were registered as a World Heritage Site in 2011 and are considered national treasures. The second part was to the Geihi Gorge. There we will take a flat bottom boat ride down the Satetsu River navigated by a boatman with a pole.

It’s 6:30am the morning of the tour. We have arrived at the Misawa AB and the first thing you are greeted with is a beautiful scene where cherry blossoms are being to bloom along the base’s main street!

We are on our way and have just stopped at our first rest stop and bathroom break. It’s been raining off and on since leaving the base.

We are here at the Chūson-ji Temple grounds. We have left the bus and walking toward the entrance. It’s raining now. We were pleasantly surprise when the tour bus driver provided an umbrella to all of us who didn’t bring one. They are the clear plastic ones you will see and they worked great!

These are the steps leading up to  the  Konjiki-do Hall (Golden Hall) that contains what everyone comes here to see: the original ‘Golden Pavilion’. The Golden Hall was dedicated in 1124, and this shrine is covered head to toe in gold leaf and lavishly embellished, representing the peak of craftsmanship of the classical period.

Leaving here, we just started walking taking us wherever the pathways lead us. I took this picture because I found the use of the tree roots as part of the steps was interesting and kind of ingenious.

This is the entrance to the Hondo, or Main Hall, where most of the important rituals and rites of the temple are performed. There is also a Treasure Hall that houses some impressive artifacts. The unfortunate part is that once again photography was prohibited.

What made this building interesting, and why I took the photo, was because it appeared recently constructed when compared to all the others we saw.

We have arrived at Geibikei or the Geibi Gorge. The gorge is about 2km long, carved out by the Satetsu river, with cliffs towering overhead at heights of 50-100 meters. As we near where we will board the boats, this is what we saw.

This where we’ve started boarding the boats. We will take two and this is the first. Miyako and I will be on the second one.

From this point on we are joined by a bunch of feathered guests hoping to be fed. The weren’t disappointed.

We bought some food on the boat to feed the ducks. They sold a bag of food for 50 yen each. You can see me holding mine in my left hand. By the time Miyako had taken the photo the little piglet had already gobbled up half a dozen pellets out of my hand!

Here we are have arrived at the sand bar near the end of the gorge. This is where we will turn around and head back to the start. Everyone has gotten off but a few and are walking further up the gorge to try their luck.

There is a small stand here where you can buy five untama or luck stones for a 100 yen. You pick out your favorite ones and then you have to throw it at a small hole across the river. If it goes into the hole successfully, they say your wish may come true!? Here is a list of luck stones you get to choose from symbolizing “福Fuku (fortune)”, “縁En (fate)”, “寿Ju (longevity)”, “愛Ai (love)”, “願Negai (wish)”, “運Un (luck)”, “恋Koi (romantic love)”, “絆Kizuna (the bond of relationship)”, “禄Roku (emolument)” and “財Zai (wealth)”.

Here we are headed back toward the boats to finish our trip in the gorge.

We are on our way back but we have been joined by a third boat.

This is basically the end for us. We are both tired and cold. We enjoyed this boat ride very much… the rain not so much. We might return again to view the gorge in the summer and the turning of the leaves in the fall.
