Miyako and I had an wonderful day travelling to the town of Iwaizumi in Iwate Prefecture yesterday to visit the Ryūsendō  Cave. One of many different tours sponsored by Misawa ITT. The tour bus was very nice which provided access to Wi-Fi while on the road.

昨日、みやこ と私は岩手県の岩泉町に龍泉洞を訪ねて素晴らしい一日を過ごしました。 三沢ITTが主催するさまざまなツアーの1つ。 ツアーバスはとても素晴らしく、外出中にWi-Fiにアクセスできました。

According to Atlas Obscura,  Ryūsendō Cave is one of the three largest limestone caverns in Japan, and features expansive subterranean galleries arching over deep sunless lakes filled with breathtakingly clear blue water. The complex has been designated as a natural monument by the Japanese government since 1934, thanks not only to its remarkable size and enchanting aquatic features, but also because of the unique varieties of bats that call the cave home.

Surveys of Ryūsendō Cave began in 1920, and thus far, some 3600m (about 2 miles) have been explored and mapped, of which 700m (a half mile) can be visited by the public. Exploration is ongoing, however, and it is believed that the full extent of the cave is likely 5000m (3 miles) or more. Additionally, eight underground lakes have been found in Ryūsendō, fed by underground river of crystal-clear spring water constantly gushing forth from the bedrock. 

アトラスオブスキュラによると、龍泉洞は日本で3大石灰岩の洞窟の1つであり、息を呑むほど澄んだ青い水で満たされた深い太陽のない湖の上にアーチ状に広がる広大な地下ギャラリーが特徴です。 この複合施設は、その驚くべきサイズと魅惑的な水生の特徴だけでなく、洞窟を故郷と呼ぶ独特の種類のコウモリのおかげで、1934年以来日本政府によって天然記念物に指定されています。

龍泉洞の調査は1920年に始まり、これまでに約3600m（約2マイル）が調査され、地図が作成されました。そのうち700m（0.5マイル）は一般の人々が訪れることができます。 しかし、探鉱は進行中であり、洞窟の全範囲は5000m（3マイル）以上である可能性が高いと考えられています。 また、龍泉洞では、岩盤から絶えず湧き出る透き通った湧き水の地下河川から水が供給される地下湖が8つ発見されています。

There were more photos taken, but sadly were unusable. My camera light was not powerful enough to overcome the darkness within the cave; and I was not savvy enough with my camera to adjust settings in the cave’s darkness. Maybe Miyako fared better using her iPad. If so I’ll get them posted as well.

After leaving Iwaizumi, we took the recently completed Sanriku Expressway. It follows the coast along the Pacific Ocean, otherwise known as the Sanriku Coast. At one point, the bus stopped and we were able to take some photos.

岩泉を出て、最近完成した三陸自動車道に乗りました。 太平洋に沿った海岸、別名三陸海岸に沿っています。 ある時、バスが止まり、写真を撮ることができました。

Next stop is Misawa, the end of the road, and a wonderful day!
