My right knee has been giving me the fits for a while now… months actually. It was mostly tolerable until recently when it started to affect my sleep at at night. That is when it seemed to hurt the most; and it was getting very difficult for me to get any real rest.

I contacted the Misawa AB Base Hospital to see if they could help me out. Evidently, it wasn’t a problem because they issued me a referral to the Orthopedics clinic right then and there. They even gave me a referral to physical therapy. Sweet!

X-rays showed that the cartilage was virtually gone… ground down until nothing was left except for some calcification deposits. After meeting with the doctor and answering all my concerns, he advised me that he would start with the most conservative procedure first. The steroid injection. If this wasn’t very effective then they would try the next step: a gel substance injection, which consists of a series of three shots.

The steroid injection was painless. He did an amazing job. Unfortunately, the pain in my knee became constant, regardless of the time of day or night, shortly thereafter. It’s been a little better than 36 hours since the shot and I am finally getting relief. Not sure what transpired there, but I’m glad it’s passing.

I have a follow-up scheduled for October 2019. In the interim, physical therapy gave me a series of exercises to perform on a daily basis. Overall, I am very pleased with the treatment and care I received during my visit.
